Vroman’s Nose History

Vroman’s Nose is a prominent hill named after Adam Vroman, who purchased 1200 acres from the Mohawks in 1712 in exchange for 100 gallons of rum and some woven blankets. Originally called Onistagrawa, “Corn Mountain,” by indigenous tribes, these mountains went on to play an important role in the American Revolution.

Vroman’s Nose is easy to spot from a distance, standing at about 600 feet high with steep, cliff-like sides. The hill’s unmistakable flat summit, referred to as the “Dance Floor,” was carved out of the sandstone bedrock by glaciers 16,000 years ago.

The Hike Up

The trailhead, located on Mill Valley Road, sets you off on the 1.6-mile out-and-back trail leading to the summit. The climb, though steep in parts, is relatively brief and suitable for hikers of all ages and skill levels.

You’ll begin your ascent through a lovely forested trail that features a mix of hardwoods, hemlocks, and lush ferns. Keep an eye out for the vibrant wildflowers in spring and the brilliant foliage show in autumn.

About halfway up, you’ll reach a junction. Here, you can choose to continue straight up to the summit or turn right for the longer loop trail around the back of the mountain. Both trails eventually lead to the Dance Floor, where you can take a well-deserved break and revel in the breathtaking views.

On clear days, you can see for miles, all the way to the peaks of the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Massachusetts’ Berkshire Mountains.

This expansive viewpoint is the perfect spot for a picnic or simply to sit, relax, and enjoy the tranquility of the landscape. Be sure to have your camera ready – the stunning vista makes for an excellent photo opportunity.
